Andrew Explains Controversy Regarding Old NIV and New NIV

In this video, Andrew explains the difference between the old and new NIV Bible versions as there has been some controversies regarding the two.

Quick summary: The new NIV uses gender inclusive language. For example,
Matthew 4:19 (old NIV): “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matthew 4:19 (new NIV): “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

There has been some controversy regarding the NIV Bibles. Because some people have an old NIV Bible, and then they come along to Pure Books, they buy a new NIV Bible and then comparing the two there’s actually quite a bit of difference.

So I just want to show you one main difference, and why that is. So if you come in here to Matthew four verse nineteen, where Jesus calls his first disciples, and he says ‘Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ Okay, so the word is ‘Men’ Where as in the new NIV translation he says, ‘Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.’

So even though this is an NIV Bible and so is this, this one’s obviously smaller, obviously a bit older they are two different translations and the reason for that is in the newer translation they tried to include a lot more gender inclusive language. So not just ‘men’ or ‘man’ but ‘people,’ or ‘brothers and sisters,’ or ‘them’ or ‘they’. So that’s kind of the main difference.

Now, if you look at different translations like the NASB, they do sometimes make a revision, but they’ll make it clear that it’s a different translation. So this one here, if you see, it’s got on the side here 2020, which means the translation was done in 2020. Where as this one here, same NASB, was done in 1995. So there’s an obvious difference between this NASB and this NASB.

Where as these two, it’s not so obvious because they haven’t shown on the side,

‘Hey this is a different translation.’ So this one was actually translated in 1984. Where as this one was translated in 2011. So they’re two different translations, but this one, has superseded this one. So you can’t buy these anymore unless you buy it secondhand.
