Pure Books has a new Mathematics curriculum in store, called Math-It. This Math curriculum contains no bookwork. Rather, all concepts are taught through games with tricks to get the child into the math mindset.
This is a curriculum that has been recommended by homeschooling pioneers, Raymond and Dorothy Moore, authors of The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook.
About Math-It
Math-It was created by Elmer W. Brooks. Math-It uses games to learn effective and proficient mathematical skills that your children will genuinely enjoy. It looks to strengthen their arithmetic speed and accuracy using tricks that will enable your child to understand mathematical concepts in a new and fun way.
Why Choose Math-It?
Math-It uses a unique approach that differs from traditional math instruction that has been proven to be effective for learners from kindergarten through to grade 8 (ages 5-14). It can be used as a perfect supplement to any curriculum or as a standalone tool for home or school use. The curriculum is flexible and adapts to your child’s pace, without overwhelming bookwork required.
Math-It uses tools to encourage a “mindset for achievement,” which fosters skills for a positive attitude towards mathematics. It contains various games, which improves speed and encourages fun in learning turning complex concepts into engaging challenges for the child to tackle.
From the writer to the reader
Besides all the hundreds of boys and girls who have sat in my own classrooms, since my retirement I have spoken to at least sixty thousand boys and girls, and their teachers, in their classrooms. Not long ago I visited a small mountain school. Soon after, I received a letter from a second grader. It contained these words:
“Dear Mr Brooks, Thank you for coming to our school yesterday. I was getting D’s in math. My folks were mad, then you came. Now I am getting A’s.”
1. Pre-Math-It: Early Adventure Into Math

Pre-Math-It is designed specifically to lay the foundation for learning for the young ones. The new edition includes the original gameboard and book, minus the dominoes. Perfect for preschoolers, it’s a stepping stone toward building a strong math mindset.
The first of three Math-It games, this one helps preschoolers develop a mindset, which enables them to learn all the basic addition facts in a single day when they are ready to learn them. No finger counting! No eye rolling! They will begin by matching the ends of dominoes, go on to the idea of one more, then two more, grouping, one back, and more.
Required: A set of 9×9 dominoes
Once students masters Pre-Math-It, they may be ready for Math-It. To ensure readiness for Math-It, a child should be comfortable counting backwards from 20 without hesitation, and able to add 0, 1, or 2 to other numbers easily (use Pre-Math-It to build these skills).
2. Math-It: How Stevie Learned His Math
Children who can count back from 20 as they can tie their shoes with their eyes closed are ready for Math-It. All these concepts are taught using games with the game cards supplied in the Math-It Kit. Each concept is expected to be familiarised before moving on to the next concept. The method used encourages proficiency and accuracy in solving math problems mentally using fun games and challenges, which the child will enjoy tackling.
“It’s not just about memorising multiplication tables or addition facts. It’s about embracing a new perspective on numbers, one that makes math not just comprehensible but enjoyable. Through simple yet effective methods, author Elmer Brooks shows how anyone, regardless of age, can develop a solid grasp of basic mathematical concepts … It’s about building a foundation, one step at a time.”
Note from the author:
Be careful about buying this book. You are wasting your money unless you want to be better at simple math and are willing to follow the directions page by page. Now, I warned you. It’s your own fault if you spend your money and receive no benefit. But I’ve had hundreds of hours of solid fun watching little folks catch on. This is my reward and my reason for writing the book. Many of my former little students are now teaching some of these easy math games to their children. I thank them all for the joy and inspiration they gave me. – E. W. Brooks
Math concepts covered in Math-It:
- Addition (adding 9’s, adding 8’s, adding 7’s, adding 6’s, twin numbers, neighbouring numbers)
- Doubling
- Multiplication (single digits, double digits – up to 12×12)
- Extras: Division using concepts learnt in ADDIT, DUBBLIT and TIMZIT

3. Advanced Math-It

Advanced Math-It helps children to master decimals, fractions, and division; even square roots and cube roots. The set gives you access to four audio downloads and includes envelopes containing the game boards and playing cards for DividIt and PercentIt.
The student should be able to:
- add seven sets of 3-digit numbers in one breath
- subtract any numbers in the trillions in one breath
- divide any 6-digit number by any 2-digit number in approximately 1-minute
- multiply three sets of any 2-digit number by another 2-digit number in approximately 1-minute
A student who can perform these tasks is ready for Advanced Math-It.

4. Math-It Guide Book: A Guide to Learning Math Concepts

One guide book as a standalone or for use with the following kits:
- Pre-Math-It
- Math-It
- Advanced Math-It
For those of you who prefer hardcopy of books this is an all-in-one printed guide book containing additional instructions for Pre-Math-It, Math-It and Advanced Math-It (if you have purchased the kit then there is a link for a PDF download for the separate levels).
This guide was written by Elmer W. Brooks, the creator of Math-It.
Parents/teachers are provided with guidelines on how to approach each of multiple objectives for each level from kindergarten through grade eight, from shapes and counting to figuring interest, averages and geometry.
The use of PreMath-It, Math-It and Advanced Math-It are recommended, but the concepts are valuable for all who teach math.
